False Keel ( Κόντρα Καρένα)

A false keel is a long piece of wood, the same width as the keel and attached underneath the keel in order to protect it.

In the case of “Faneromeni” the false keel is essentially the set of lead ballast weights installed under the keel.

Because the ballast weights are placed under the center section of the keel and do not cover the whole length of the keel, they are supplemented by a fore and an aft wooden beam, as can be seen in the sketch.
